Overview

Wagai Primary School in the Nyanza province of Western Kenya provides education for 450 students in the local area. Before we became involved with the school in 2002, Wagai had no resources and children were being taught in mud classrooms.

Our long-term vision in this rural and remote part of western Kenya has been to tackle issues of early childhood education, social welfare and child support throughout the region. We did this through an initial capital investment for the school, followed by a long period of helping them develop efficient ways of running the institution.

Since Moving Mountains agreed to support the school, we have helped them establish an efficient school committee which works with the MM Kenya Committee and the education authorities to promote a long-term vision of education throughout the whole Wagai District. From the outset we focussed on six schools for our projects, ensuring that this vision would touch several thousand children including those at Wagai Primary School and make a significant impact on academic performance in Nyanza.

Since 2002 Wagai Primary School has become an asset to the community. It offers pupils a better chance to attend a high-quality secondary school, potentially gain further education at a college and ultimately a future hope for employment. This progressive support emphasises self-governance and empowers individuals, enabling them to support themselves and their families in the future.

History of the Project

2002 - 2008 – Moving Mountains became actively involved with the school. To date construction work on the school has included seven classrooms, a library, a water borehole and pump. Moving Mountains has also helped the school to establish an efficient school committee.

Future Aims

Moving Mountains continues a strong link with the school and the community, to provide ongoing support, to continue to improve education. This includes counseling, advice on handling committee matters, helping them to start income-generating projects and how to run a development fund. The long-term aim is to make the school self-sufficient.

This dream of a self-sufficient school depends on the generosity of our volunteers and donors. Help provide the children of Wagai Primary School with an education by making a donation today.
