Adventure Alternative is the travel company that was started at the same time as the charity, and it has supported Moving Mountains with almost all of its administrative costs in the UK, Kenya and Nepal from inception in 2001. This donation in kind allows the charity to operate without almost any overheads.

Adventure Alternative Support

The total estimated amount of this support is £30,000 per year, most of which is staff time, office space, utilities and administrative expenses. Three of the trustees work for Adventure Alternative and provide their time for the charity under their employment contract, and this principle applies to the staff of AA Nepal and Kenya who also help run the Moving Mountains NGOs in those countries too.

The business model of Adventure Alternative is much like a social enterprise in that it generates tourism revenue in areas where Moving Mountains works. It promotes jobs and business, and it invests in those regions through the work of the charity. For example in Nepal the villages we work have become popular places for tourists to visit. This joint approach of capital investment plus providing employment and revenue has been very successful over many years and has led to long term regeneration in the villages where we work.

A main tenet of the model is the power of investment to promote business and to provide long-term incomes and self-esteem. The model has won awards and plaudits for its straightforward approach to sustainable development.

As a registered tour operator Adventure Alternative is also our provider for the ground handling of fundraising trips, volunteers and school groups.

None of the trustees of Moving Mountains benefit financially from the link with Adventure Alternative, the company acts as beneficial partner to Moving Mountains and we can confirm that there is no conflict of interest in the relationship.

Charity trips

Any organisation that provides transport, accommodation, flights or activities must comply with the UK package travel rules, irrespective of the charitable aim or purpose of that trip. That includes having liability insurance and insolvency bonding. Therefore Moving Mountains contracts Adventure Alternative to provide these ground services and ensures that any money given to the charity for those services is protected under the package travel regulations.

Friends of Moving Mountains

Friends of Moving Mountains is a partner organisation supporting the development work of Moving Mountains in Kenya and Nepal.

It was started by Brian and Karla Sadler after they met some of the Moving Mountains Kenya leadership team on an Adventure Alternative Mount Kenya climb. The experience left a lasting impression and in 2025, Friends of Moving Mountains was registered in the U.S. as a non-profit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The passion, credibility, and long-term vision of Moving Mountains aligned with Brian and Karla’s own beliefs in in sustainable, community-led change. Friends of Moving Mountains exists to invest in education, health, and social welfare initiatives that support children in impoverished communities – empowering the next generation and fostering sustainable, transformative change.
