Social Welfare: Life Skills Programme
Moving Mountains Kenya deliver essential life skills to vulnerable children through a variety of activities, camps, classes, sports and adventures. These sessions offer young people a vital respite from the challenging realities of daily life in the slums, providing a safe environment where they can simply enjoy being children.
Overview
Moving Mountains Kenya is transforming lives by equipping children and young people with the essential life skills needed to navigate a challenging world. Our Life Skills Programme engages with hundreds through targeted holiday activities, weekend workshops, educational classes, sport and music and dedicated outreach activities. By blending practical education with therapeutic outdoor adventures, the program has driven remarkable improvements in participants’ confidence, teamwork, and personal well-being.
The growth and transformation that our team of staff and volunteers have the pleasure of being part of witness first hand as children shed their insecurities and stand tall during mentorship and counselling sessions focused on self-esteem, healthy relationships, and resilience. Life-saving First Aid skills provide practical training and beyond the classroom we are able to build up a deep trust during therapeutic team hikes to local waterfalls and hills, while others explore their creative side in our music studio.
The other big part of our life skills programme is our ‘Africamps’, originally started during the 1990’s in partnership with Adventure Alternative, an Africamp brings groups from all over the world to East Africa to join in with a camp with local children to share their life experiences, cultures, ambitions and friendship. The camps are a challenging week to ten day experience, often followed up with a climb on Mt Kenya and / or an overland safari, all activities that the children and young people from across the world and Kenya would experience for the first time together, a shared adventure that benefits both the international visitors and the kids involved with the life skills programme.
