Kimbo Primary School

In 2024 Moving Mountains teamed up with our good friends from the Irish charity, Granaghan Outreach, and started working at the Kimbo Junior and Primary School, an overpopulated school on the western side of Mount Kenya that is located in the Riuru sub-county, close to the boundary of Mount Kenya National Park. The start of this project marked nearly two decades of Granaghan Outreach and Moving Mountains working together.

Overview

Tigithi Primary was before we rebuilt that school, the majority of the classrooms had no floors and the structures were made from wood off-cuts, so although the school had a picturesque look, the learning environment was very far from ideal. The wooden structures are not considered permanent and there are large gaps between all the off-cuts used in the walls, so the classrooms provided very little protection from the wind, rain and cold weather which is common on the slopes of Mount Kenya. As a result children found it very difficult to concentrate during lessons, particularly during the winter months.

Moving Mountains hope to eventually replace all the temporary classrooms, with the aim of leaving Kimbo Primary with a school that provides a safe and comfortable environment for the children to learn. Before starting the work at Kimbo the school had 3 x classrooms made from bricks which needed minimal repair work and 6 x classrooms that need to be replaced.

Embu Rescue Centre

The Embu Rescue Centre provides a safe place in Embu where between 70 and 120 children can get a daily lunch and breakfast and receive help from caring adult staff and volunteers. The feeding programme is part of a wider holistic 'umbrella' of support that we provide for children in the town.
