Barakawandu Primary School

One of our most recent partnerships in Western Kenya is with Barakawandu Primary School. Together we are working to pursue a programme of educational development. By improving the basic facilities of the school we improve the learning environment for the children, impacting on attainment and quality of education.

Overview

Before 2012 the Kenyan government had funded the building of basic classroom structures but these had been left unfinished with no floors, windows or proper walls. Since summer 2012 when Moving Mountains agreed to support Barakawandu, volunteers have helped build classrooms, installed windows frames, plastered the walls and floors and equipped all the rooms with desks.

We continued the development with the installation of a school kitchen with Eco-Stove and plan to continue the development of the school in the near future.

History of the Project

2012 – Moving Mountains started supporting the school and renovated all of the current classrooms, replacing all window frames and panes, plastering walls and floors and providing desks and equipment.

2015 – After the collapse of the original kitchen at Barkawandu (traditional mud structure) earlier in 2014, the Board of Moving Mountains Kenya confirmed that the construction of a new kitchen at the school was a priority, by the summer of 2015 we had built a new kitchen and installed an eco-stove.
