On December 8th 2021, Gilbert Njeru - who many of you know well as our chairman in Kenya - will be embarking on an ambitious cycle challenge to raise money for Moving Mountains. He will cycle all the way from Point Lenana on the top of Mount Kenya to the Indian Ocean over six days - an impressive distance of around 690 kilometres!

Gilbert will descend the mountain across glaciers and moraine, alpine heath and through bamboo forest to the hilly country surrounding Kenya's highest peak. His journey then follows almost a direct line to the sea at Malindi, cycling right through the huge Tsavo National Park and braving the dangers of big cats and predators, before entering the tropical belt and reaching the Indian Ocean.

Check out the below video to discover more about Gilbert’s challenge and the reasons why he is taking on this monumental feat.

Anyone inspired by Gilbert’s efforts can sponsor him here.

We would love to invite people to take on their own cycle challenge and raise money for Moving Mountains directly. Ride the same distance as Gilbert - 690km - during the month of December and ask your friends and family to sponsor you for your efforts!

For the more athletic volunteers, we challenge you to either push the distance as far as you can or to complete 690km in the same time frame as Gilbert - 6 days!

And, to add a little more excitement, we’re giving away a free trip for someone to experience the important work of Moving Mountains first hand in either Kenya or Tanzania.

To make this inclusive for all abilities, the winner will not be the person who rides the fastest, or even the furthest, but the individual who raises the largest amount of sponsorship money for this incredible cause!

Terms and conditions for the competition can be found here.

Here's how to get involved:

1. Sign up to Moving Mountains’ Strava club and join our leaderboard!

Here, you can stay updated with Gilbert’s training rides and watch his big challenge unfold as he logs his ride at the end of each day. It’s also the best way for anyone competitive to see how they’re stacking up against other participants.

2. Set up your own JustGiving page and choose Moving Mountains as the official charity.

You can do this by clicking ‘Fundraise for us’ in the top right corner of this page. To be in with a chance of winning a free trip to Tanzania or Kenya, make sure that you include ‘Summit 2 Sea’ in the title of your fundraising page so that we can easily keep track of your efforts.

3. Prepare for the challenge and get people to sponsor you!

Put on your lycra, pump up your tyres and get out on your bike to prepare for the big challenge. Spread the word to friends and family too and ask them to support you with a donation - or to saddle up and take part themselves…
